I set a goal for myself last year to send our kindergartener to school with at least one piece of handmade clothing each school day. I decided to keep myself accountable and post her daily outfit on instagram with the hashtag #schoolfashionbymom. In November, we found out we were moving from the eternal summer of Hawaii to chilly California with a month vacation to frigid Michigan. That transition kind of put a kink in my plans and I resolved to start fresh again with another #schoolfashionbymom school year.
Dressing a six year old who seems to have her finger on what’s “cool” was presenting a bit of a challenge, so when Violette Field Threads revealed their Fall Boho collection in collaboration with Bari J for Art Gallery Fabrics– both K and I were flipping out in excitement. She loves the boho style- easy fitting, vibrant and eclectic feel. I love all things VFT and Bari J so it seemed like a dream come true!
The response to the collection has been incredible. I have loved seeing everyone’s amazing creations in the VFT fan group and all over social media. Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to dive in and dream up some new outfits for K to wear this fall.
Let’s take a look at each (of the 5) pattern and fabric combinations:
First up is Luna.
It’s a sweet dolman style dress with a relaxed fit bodice, a darling square neckline and back tie closure. The Luna pattern sews up like a dream- in a little over an hour the garment was cut, sewn and pressed for photos! I kind of feel like sewing a separate sleeve is a little overrated and we should just dolman all the things. HA.
Every girl loves pockets- VFT did a phenomenal job designing these super cute, oversized front pockets. K could hardly keep her hands out of them, and I’m pretty sure a few pebbles found their way into the pockets throughout the shoot. On a positive note, they make for perfect storage for a lens cap or cell phone when I happen to be wearing leggings that day.
I selected the Cocquet Bouquet print for the skirt and Stitched Diamant Verve for the bodice. I love the jewel tones in the floral print and the softness of the bodice fabric design. While perusing Hobby Lobby the other day, I stumbled upon this adorable blue leaf trim that fit perfectly in the midst of the gorgeous floral and greenery of the Cocquet Bouquet print.
Next up we have the showstopping Odette.
Odette has a silhouette so precious and sweet it will make your cheeks hurt! I just adore the darling flounces that bounce playfully with every move. The gorgeous side ties draw the easy fitting top in on my thin-waisted daughter.
Odette can be sewn as a dress or a top, is fully lined and has a keyhole back tie closure.
Odette was a detailed sew, more suited for the intermediate sewist. The end result made me sit back and beam with pride at what a gorgeous top I had just made!
For fabrics, I chose to make Odette from all one print- the delicate and dainty Petit Potpourri Gold. The print showcases the softest pink and golden floral with light sage greenery. Since K’s favorite color is pink, I added a pop of pink with the beautiful ribbon sash and ties from Hobby Lobby. For the keyhole closure, I used a soft pink crocheted lace trim.
You can also see the Sloane cropped pant in this outfit. Sloane is a skinny fit pant or cropped pant with an optional tuxedo stripe. I really love the fit of these and of course, more pockets! I loved sewing with this amazing AGF Denim that had a shimmer in the light wash look. Pants are so fast to sew, I don’t know why I don’t make more.
A fourth pattern in the Fall Boho collection is the Julianna top and dress.
Julianna is an all knit dress or top, with the most adorable gathered sleeves or simple long sleeves. I sewed up a top version because K is always in need of cute sleeved tops to go with her leggings and skinny jeans. The dress version has a circle skirt just begging for twirls!
My favorite feature of the Julianna is the gathered sleeve. The sleeve cap is gathered and gives a little “puff” style, the mid sleeve is gathered with an elastic casing and the hem of the sleeve is also gathered with elastic.
Julianna was another fast sew and perfect for beginners. I love the softness and structure of the Joy Plante Cora knit. Art Gallery knits are buttery smooth, the perfect weight and stretch for garments and sew up like a charm.
Last, but most definitely not least (more like my favorite!!!), is the Giselle Kimono.
The Giselle kimono has several hem options, looks fabulous trimmed out with poms or fringe, and is perfect for layering as the temperatures fluctuate.
Seriously a super fast and easy sew, I know you’ll end up with 10 or so once you get going. Kind of like pringles, once you pop you just can’t stop! The coolest part- Giselle can be made in your size too! I’m holding on to a little bit of this gorgeous Paradis- Sweet to make a matchy matchy set for K and I!
She calls this her “poncho” and wants to have it on all the time. Thank goodness the beautiful floral fabric is light and airy, because it’s been so hot lately! Isn’t it supposed to be chilly and crisp in the fall?? Giselle pairs perfectly with the Sloane skinnies, and apparently that combo will induce sassy poses on the spot!
I hope you enjoyed checking out our #schoolfashionbymom update featuring the *new* Fall Boho collection in collaboration with Bari J for Art Gallery fabrics. All fabrics shown were from the incredible Joie de Vivre collection and are a perfect pairing with the Luna, Odette, Sloane, Julianna and Giselle patterns.

These are all SEW lovely! I need to get my hands on that Luna STAT!
You really do!!!! It is perfect for some quirky fabric combos- which is right up your alley!
Your makes are fabulous. Sometimes I feel like we should Dolman all the sleeves too!
I’m glad I’m not alone! Thank you 🙂
