DIY Wallpaper: Floral Horse Bedroom Project with Hawthorne Supply Co.

Hey friends! This project has been a long time coming…basically since we decided on which house to purchase back in October! However, the timing was spot on as our friends at Hawthorne Supply Co. released some incredible peel-and-stick wallpaper to their website last fall! If you’ve been a long time follower, you know of our love for Hawthorne Supply Co for their beautiful fabric and many substrates! But to now have the same gorgeous prints available for our walls…I mean…. COME ON!!! Home decor has never looked better!! If you follow me on Instagram, you saw a few sneak peeks and I’ve been so eager to share the final look with you so without further ado…let’s get to it!

Selecting the Perfect Print & Prepping the Wall

Kenzie and I sat down and scrolled the 80+ wallpaper options on their website and decided that the Plush Floral in Sweet Pea was the perfect choice to create an incredible accent wall in her new room. We both were anxious and excited for the wallpaper to arrive.

In the meantime, we busted out the power sander and smoothed the texture from her wall. The non-toxic re-adhesive wallpaper goes on best with a clean, dry, smooth wall. They recommend that if the wall was recently painted that you wait at least 30 days before applying the wallpaper. Once we had the wall ready to go, we gathered the few needed supplies: a smoothing tool (I used my Sams Card…no shame here), a step stool and a sharp knife to edge and trim the wall paper. I snapped a quick before picture so you can see where we started. Note: the furniture is covered because we were sanding the wall, you won’t need to cover anything! There’s no mess with this awesome wallpaper!

Applying the Wallpaper

I’m going to show you a quick video tutorial on my Instagram stories this week so keep an eye out for the video. I thought I’d give you a quick rundown of how I applied the wallpaper in the meantime. If you have any hesitations on applying wallpaper let me be the first to just tell you it is SO easy and it is NOT your mama’s wallpaper! If you can put a sticker on something, you can apply this wallpaper. The best news: each wallpaper order will come with an installation guide and Hawthorne has a full FAQ on their site to help you even further!

Starting in the left corner, you’ll apply the top edge of the roll (the bottom has your name and order number printed on it) by peeling the backing paper away from the wallpaper and simply sticking the wallpaper to the wall. I worked in about 10 inch increments. Peel the backing paper, smooth the wallpaper on. It’s really that simple!

Once you reach the bottom of your wall, you’ll use a sharp blade or knife to trim along the top of your baseboard/trim. Grab your next roll with the top (non-text printed) edge back up at the ceiling and 3/4″ inch overlap on the previous roll. Peel the backing paper down about 10″, smooth the wallpaper to the wall ensuring the overlap is creating a seamless print and so on! Seriously SO.EASY. If you’re doubting me, just check the instastories for more behind the scenes and a quick video!

No glue, no sloppy paste, no scrapping to remove it, none of that old school wallpaper drama! This wallpaper is removable and reusable and even wipeable. And may I add, addicting!

The Completed Look

Now that we’ve talked through the prep phase and applying the wallpaper…I bet you’re just beyond excited to see the final look. Wait no more…here she is:
