I eagerly sewed up a few outfits for our big summer vacation this year. If you’re anything like me, you see a vacation as an opportunity for so many different photo spots! I reached for patterns that were quick and easy sews so I could quick and easily fill my suitcase and be ready to roll. Since I already had the free Spring Shorts pattern from Peppermint Magazine printed, it was an easy choice.
I had this really fabulous, bold stripe from Mood Fabrics that was perfect for creating a subtle 4th of July look. I love the colors and the variance in stripe thickness…totally makes for a wow factor!
If you haven’t sewn the Spring Shorts yet, you’re missing out! The pattern sews up in less than an hour and is super basic. It is the perfect beginner pattern, it’s FREE and right on trend for #havelegswearshorts!
I made a few modifications to fit my desired look: I reduced the front rise by about 1″ to make the front slightly less “high waisted.” Also, I omitted the drawstrings and went for a basic rectangle waist tie. Lastly, I reduced the inseam by about an inch so the shorts would hit a little higher and be a bit more summer casual.
To style the shorts for a great patriotic vibe, I paired a basic white knit tank, a straw fedora and white/tan slides.
Once I threw on my favorite denim jacket, I felt like it toned down the shorts some to be wearable all year round!
The elastic waistband makes for a really comfortable wear, and the lightweight fabric kept me cool while strolling around NYC!
Special shout out to my awesome photographer, and 9 year old daughter! She and I had so much fun photographing my vacation outfits! More to come…
