Tie details are everywhere this summer- on the shoulders, on the back, around the waist, at the sleeve, etc. and I couldn’t resist the new pattern release from Tilly & the Buttons based on the tie back alone! Paired with the free shorts from Peppermint Magazine and I am feeling all the summer vacay vibes with this outfit! Let’s take a closer look!

The Fabric

I hardly ever wear yellow. Seriously, this top is the *second* yellow item of clothing in my closet. I was feeling inspired by all the great summer sunshine and had to sew something with this Telio Bamboo Rayon Jersey Knit in Golden. This knit is drapey, its super smooth and has a great stretch and recovery. And…it’s the perfect sunshine-y yellow for a summer top!

For the shorts, I used an incredible striped Essex linen from Imagine Gnats. It is opaque which makes it perfect for shorts! I love the texture and lightweight body of the linen. And of course, I’m totally embracing the wrinkle this summer and letting the linen really show it’s true self.

The Patterns

The top was made from the new Romy pattern by Tilly & the Buttons. I love the clear instructions and simple finishes to this pattern. I did make one modification, and that was due to the nature of the fabric I was using. According to the pattern instructions, the sewist is advised to use a structured knit. Being the pattern rebel that I am, I wanted to use a slinkier knit than what was recommended so I decided to work with the drape! I scooped the back of the pattern a couple of inches deeper than the original design to allow for the back to slouch and play along with how the fabric would hang.

The shorts were sewn from the free Drawstring Shorts from Peppermint Magazine. I love a good free pattern!!! Paperbag waists are super on trend this summer! The pattern was simple to sew and took about an hour once I had all my pieces cut out. I omitted the waist ties because I knew I wanted to use this cute new belt bag I got- not sure if I can pull of a fanny pack but I’m trying HAHA!
